Abstract This article discusses the intertextual relations between Euripides' tragedy The Bacchae, which stages Dionysian rites, and the threefold narratives of liberation and vocation in the book of Acts (9,1-19; 22,1-21; 26,1-23; 5,17-23; 12,4-17; 16,23-40). This is done against the background of research influenced by the History of Religions School, which postulates a literary dependence between the two, as well as the challenge of this very dependence by the tradition and the advocates of dialectical theology. The explicitness of the intertextual relations between Acts and The Bacchae which was well known throughout the ancient world, varies depending on context within the scripture. According to the build-up as a means of composition, the allusions to the mysteries of Dionysos serve the writer of Acts as a support for depicting the Christian faith in a culture shaped by Hellenistic civilisation. He offers ancient readers opportunities to associate, follow and identify with the new faith in Jesus Christ.
