Abstract In 1985, F.G. Maier introduced the factoid concept into the sphere of ancient history, with fifth century Cyprus as a case study. Twenty-five years later, some of the conclusions of F.G. Maier's pioneering study are still controversial, and the existence of ethnical and cultural conflicts in the island during the Persian period is still accepted by a number of scholars. Through the analysis of the role and the image of Cyprus in the Herodotean account of the Persian Wars (5. 104-116 ; 7. 90), we can infer the existence of internal and dynastical conflicts between the kingdoms of the island, without any ethnical or racial connotation. The superposition of the Herodotean ideology on the political structure of fifth century Cyprus (still partially unknown to us) is at the origin of the modern ethnical reading of the history of the island during the Persian period.
