Abstract The textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible advanced greatly in 16th century Spain, especially in connection with the founding of the University of Alcalá and the publication of the Compultensian Polyglot. The two most important figures in this enterprise were Francisco Jiménez Cardinal de Cisneros and Benito Arias Montano.
