Abstract Josephus understands Ezra and Nehemia as contemporaries and dates them into the time of Xerxes. Both, Ezra and Nehemia, are not acting together, particularly according to 3Ezra 9 one after another. With both figures Josephus is looking back to the main acts of foundating postexilic Juda, culminating in the rebuilding of the temple. In doing so Josephus is concentrating on Ezra’s and Nehemia’s activities in Jerusalem. In Josephus’ view Ezra is the more important person, according to 3Ezra 9 concentrating himself on the divorce of marriages of Judeans with foreign women and the promulgation of the law. Nehemia is mainly the rebuilder of the townwall. Other aspects of his efficacy are omitted (for example his second sojourn in Jerusalem) or thrusted into the background (for example the settlement of Judeans in Jerusalem). The same is true of the activities of Nehemia’s opponents.
