Abstract Genesis 9,6a, mostly translated as »Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed«, has often been understood as a divine ordinance prescribing the death penalty for (intentional) murderers. Others have proposed to interpret the preposition beth not as a beth causae, but as a beth pretii. This article seeks to demonstrate that the linguistic categories of causation and value that must be distinguished in most Western languages can effectively be combined in biblical Hebrew in the use of the preposition beth.
