Abstract The correct composition-critical division of Genesis 32 provides the key to understanding the geographical oddities of the chapter. As soon as we recognize the Elohist's authorship of Gen 32,2f.25–33* (with Tz. Yoreh, ZAW 117, 2005) and the doublet within vv. 4–22 is separated, the Elohistic text may be plausibly rearranged in the following order: 32,1–2a.14b–22.24*.25–26aα.27.(28–30a.)30b.31.2b–3. This new arrangement solves several problems inherent in the chapter.
