Abstract The cry of the souls to God in Rev 6,10 to avenge their sheltered blood on the murderer disturbs the context of the preaching of love to the enemies and of unconditional reconciliation in the New Testament. Its biblical past history points to the paradigm of a divine order of life, whose violation concerns the holiness of God. The cry of vengeance of the witnesses of blood is part of the history of conflict and probation contextualized by a cosmic structure by means of images transcending history. In this structure the times of the cultic reassurance and participation of salvation alternate with times of human engagement and divine judgement. Against this background the cry of the martyrs is a key of understanding the soteriology and the history of theology in Rev.
