Abstract For John Calvin it is God who is speaking in the Holy Scripture, but for him to be understood, «he deigns to consecrate the mouths and tongues of men to his service, making his own voice to be heard in them.» (Inst IV 1.5). As the «sum total of our wisdom» (Inst. 1,1.11) it provides the regula for a good and happy life. But for a right understanding it needs hermeneutical methods. Since Calvin depends on the humanistic tradition, he found this methods in philological and rhetorical analysis of the text and in its historical contextualization. Calvin put a great deal of exegetic thought into his biblical commentaries. The article enters into a discourse with Calvin as biblical exegete. It deals with his understanding of the bible as God's word and his concept of writing a good commentary. A third chapter gives some examples of Calvin as exegete.
