||In my first essay I carefully go over the occurrences of the verb עות «to bend, to make crooked», in Amos, Psalms, Lamentations
and Job, The aim of such a research is to define the meaning of this verb within the various contexts in which it occurs,
so that I can late explain what does Qohelet mean by mu.
The passage from the book of Amos in which עות occurs recalls
the prohibitions of Deuteronomy and Leviticus about the «balances of deceit», a theme which is often found in other texts
such as Hosea, Micah, Proverbs. In the book of Proverbs the «balances of deceit» are condemned by the solemn formula תּוֹעֳבַת
יְהוָה, which underlines what is incompatible with God's nature and therefore chaotic, alien and dangerous within the cosmic
and social order. It has to be remarked that in two passages from the same book it is Qohelet's catchword הבל which shows
such overtones. In Job 19,6 the object of עות is Job himself, who states that God has undoubtedly wronged him, in opposition
to the opinions upheld by his friends. After going over these texts, I conclude that עות is linked to what does not correspond
to fixed and acknowledged rules, that is, after all, to the disorder.
Things being as they are, as I believe, in the last
part of my essay I pause to investigate into the order's grounds in traditional Wisdom. The examination of some passages from
the book of Proverbs shows that it is up to the sage to walk along his «path», that's to say to behave like the righteous,
so that he can consolidate in human life the order God fixed at the beginning of creation. The one who acts like this follows
the way of the justice; the one who subverts it makes an «abomination to Lord» and an attempt to Israel's holiness.
sum up, עות «to bend, to make crooked, to pervert» anyway is the same as endangering the order and transgressing the justice
and if it is Jhwh himself who perverts right and justice, traditional Wisdom is seriously questioned.
Now it is necessary
to verify what is the precise meaning of עות in the book of Qohelet, and this will be the object of my next paper.
