Abstract Charity, or agape, seems to be the ultimate of what is free, A very ancient tradition however, sees in this a form of love that implies the dynamic of desire. In this case, can we still think of agape as a purely free form of love? After expounding the principle articulations of this question, it will be shown how taking psychoanalysis into account can enlighten the complex relationship between eros and agape. The latter is in the realm of sublimation, and as such, is motivated by a subliminal eros, takes root in it, mobilizes it and orients it without being reduced to it, in a relationship of continuity-rupture. Agape love, including towards ones enemies, cannot therefore be purely oblative.
