Abstract A new reading and interpretation of Cols. 31:10 - 33:13 of the Temple Scroll, describing the House of the Laver and the House of the Utensils, suggest that the House of the Laver should be shifted 28 cubits west relative to the location proposed by Yadin. This brings the Laver above the western end of Cistern 5 - a geological fissure to be identified with the "pit (מחילה) which extended downward into the land," mentioned in the Temple Scroll, Col. 32:12-14. Both. Houses were real structures of the pre-Herodian Temple, a better understanding of the architectural evolution of the Temple is permitted.
