Abstract The underworld ,,Sheol "is described differently in the texts of the Hebrew Bible: 1. it is a place in which JHWH is not present (so e.g. in Ps 88:6), 2. JHWH does act in the Sheol (e.g. in Am 9:2). Usually this is being recognized as a development in the history of ancient Israelite religion, which can be found in different passages within the text of the Hebrew Bible. This present study is devoted to one single passage (Is 14:9): its textual history demonstrates the shift from the power of Sheol to JHWHs reign in it.
