Abstract In the Hebrew Bible occur 32 modal-explicative complex sentences, whose predications are negated. In regard to 18 modal-explicative complex sentences, a negation must be added in the translation in the modal-explicative subordinate clause. Jerome has translated thirteen of the 18 negated complex sentences literally in this respect as he introduced the subordinated sentences through the subjunctive ut. However, he would have to have introduced the subordinated sentences after the rules of the Latin grammar through ut non or ne, since the predications are negated.
