Abstract The arts and movies have long been fascinated with John's depiction of Jesus, especially his relation to the mystery of death. G. Bertagna, therefore, analyzes three film adaptations of Lazarus' story, by F. Zeffirelli, M. Scorsese and R. Young. Each director has chosen a particular "lens" through which to focus on Jesus (sometimes quite distinct from Johannine characterization): the "mysterious deepness" and transcendence, like a light beyond this world (Zeffirelli); his mix of humanity and divinity and his fight against death (Scorsese); his friendliness and "accessibility" (Young). A final reference is due to P.P. Pasolini and his recourse to John's Gospel for some dramatic elements of the death scene in his II Vangelo secondo Matteo.
