Abstract "Satanization" is the way of characterization a narrator uses to depict his adversaries in a bad light. Which one of such strategies does John adopt to introduce Judas and "the Jews" in his story? Why are the attributes and actions of Judas and "the Jews" so close to Satan's attributes and actions? Through a narrative critical analysis of the Johannine passages in which Judas and "the Jews" are involved, E. Salvatore shows how the serious charge in Jn 8:44, «You are from your father the devil», far from being an anti-Semitic utterance of the Fourth Evangelist, is the climactic moment of a polemic intended for the readers to dissociate themselves either from inappropriate Christologies or from their contemporary unbelievers and persecutors of the Johannine community.
