Abstract This paper, written in memoriam of the great Italian archeologist M. Piccirillo (1944-2008), has two parts; the first half is a description of Johannine topoi, geographical places which assume a strong theological and symbolic value in the Fourth Gospel, though not losing a historical reference - as witnessed by the Fathers of the Church and recent archeological excavations, such as Bethsaida in Galilee (Jn 12:21), Sychar and Jacob's well in Samaria (Jn 4:5-6) and Efmini (Jn 11:54). In the second part P. Kaswalder presents the most recent results from archeological excavations in wadi Kharrar (Jordan), which makes a decisive contribution to the identification, of «Bethany across the Jordan (Jn 1:28).
