Abstract Thatcher's paper is a comprehensive survey of the recent state of debate on John and Judaism, especially in a post-Shoah world. The inherent paradox of the Fourth Gospel consists in the fact that it seems both the most imbued with first-century Judaism (assuming familiarity with Jewish Scriptures, symbols and theological themes) and the most anti-Judaic of the gospels because of the severe attitude towards that group of characters it labels οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι. Thatcher examines possible approaches to the issue "John and Judaism" according to their answers to two fundamental questions: « Who are the persons John labels οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι?» and «Why does John speak about that people in the way he does?», and presents the most, important European and American scholars who have offered an answer to these questions (J.L. Martyn, R,E. Brown, A. Reinkartz, R, Hahola, M. Lowe etc.). The paper ends with a look at future trends in research and the outline of six specific questions that, according to the author, must be answered by any comprehensive theory on John and Judaism, especially by exegetes and preachers interested in interfaith dialogue who do not want to miss the challenge of presenting the Fourth Gospel and its hermeneutical tensions to modem Christian audiences who view John's narrative as sacred Scripture.
