Abstract In the debate on the development and history of the Hebrew language in the biblical period, many syntactical features remain to be described in detail. In the present paper one such feature, the narrative use oj wayhi followed by a temporal phrase and a main clause, is analysed. What comes to light indicates that LBH authors knew narrative wayhi from the study of CBH texts, hut that it was not an organic component of their language. Thus the analysis of this feature strengthens the chronological approach to Biblical Hebrew.
