Abstract Known solely through two contracts from the fifth century between Judaeans and Egyptians, these documents have corne down to us quite complete, and their content reveals a number of informations as to their practices. This paper proposes to compare the tenor of these marriages with the only one endo-gamous union, and the customs of Juda and Egypt. And some questions arise. What do we know about the Judaeans'right to mixed marriage ? How can we explain these unions in Elephantine ? What kind of informations do these documents bring us concerning the customs and practices which mold these mixed marriages' essence. It appears that Judaeans shared some customs with their neighbors, especially economic ones like the mohar, the dowry and kept some other practices like the proposal of marriage to the father and affirmation of status. Judaeans also borrowed and adopted many Egyptian customs like divorce and advantages at the death of each spouse. To conclude we may say that these marriages attest a true open-mindedness of the Judaean community but within certain limits.
