Abstract It may be true that the historical method in biblical exegesis in a certain way sidesteps the normativity of Scripture, that its results are often contradictory and lacking in reliability, and that historical cognition is inevitably affected by the subjectivity of interpretation. However, the present article counters these dogmatic, spiritual and epistemological objections by arguing that stronger reasons definitely call for a historical quest: Christian beliefs are to a large extent based on events in the past; historical experience is fundamental to human existence and self-understanding; and historical likelihood is an efficient antidote against the arbitrariness in much of contemporary pseudo-historiography on the beginnings of Christianity.
