Abstract Many Christians have reservations in confessing the virgin birth (natus ex virgine Maria) of Jesus Christ. This essay argues that the interpretations of the virgin birth are the problematic elements and not the biological miracle. Although there are neither theological fundamentals nor christological creeds dependent upon natus ex Maria virgine, it nevertheless has two valuable ethical meanings: first it claims respect for the privacy of Mary, and secondly it restricts the religious desire to find meaning in every inherited conviction. Therefore, the creed remains for good reasons in the doctrine of the church.
