Abstract From the end of the Middle Ages (Chaucer) up to the middle of the 18th century (Handel/Jennens) Belshazzar appeared as an exemplary villain intended to warn princes (Sachs) or unrepentant sinners (Calderón). After Goethe's exceptional sentimental hero - the first who is no more confronted with Daniel and his wisdom - Romantic lyrics imply a political message in Belshazzar's story (Byron, Heine). Anders explicitly only mentions the writing on the wall, also associating a political dimension.
